Sierpes Street

Sierpes Street However, it was not always called Sierpes; originally, it was known as Espaderos Street due to the presence of a large number of sword-selling establishments. It is not known exactly when or why its name was changed, and there are various theories about the origin of the name Sierpes. A popular legend claims that children began to mysteriously disappear in the vicinity of this street in Seville. The fate of these children was unknown, and the city’s regent began to investigate the case. This is where Melchor de Quintana y Argüeso, a fugitive from justice who had taken refuge in the city’s underground, comes into the story. One day, the regent received an anonymous letter from Melchor promising to identify the culprit behind the disappearances in exchange for his freedom. The regent agreed and was led by the fugitive to the underground galleries of Seville, where he pointed out a gigantic serpent, responsible for all the disappearances, thus solving the mystery. The lifeless body of the serpent was displayed in the city streets for citizens to see.
